Reading the passage

Theater here means an artistic movement or enterprise, not a single building. We have units in different cities producing different kinds of plays. Together, they represent a broad range of African American artists and audiences.

What we’re looking for

So the national element involves both reach and breadth of representation. We should keep that achievement distinct from the government program that helped support it.

Working the answers

  • A

A performing arts center suggests a venue. The author is talking about the collective work of artists across numerous units and cities, not establishing one publicly funded center.

  • B
    Correct

A broad dramatic enterprise reflecting diverse views and tastes matches the argument. The first paragraph supplies its geographic reach, while the second and third explain the variety of art and audiences it represents.

  • C

The FTP was a federal program, but the national black theater was an artistic achievement that its units approached through their work. This confuses the supporting program with what the artists were creating.

  • D

We are not given a collection of plays endorsed by scholars. The emphasis is a living theatrical enterprise and its range of productions, not a canon endorsed by scholars.

  • E

The text does not establish black ownership of a chain of playhouses. Artists working across cities are not automatically a business chain, and their ownership arrangements are not the point.
