Reading the passage

Gender roles shape society. That's the shared topic we should already have in mind: A discusses this way of studying history, and B uses it to explain Roman politics and culture. The difficult reading has done most of the work for us. We don't need a more complicated connection just because the wording of the passages was dense.

Working the answers

  • A

This is a concern in A: individual women have receded from historical attention. B doesn't discuss a decline in research. It supplies an analysis of Rome, not an account of what historians have stopped studying.

  • B
    Correct

A discusses gender as a framework for understanding social and political structures. B shows how women's domestic roles became part of Augustus's political project and its artistic expression. One discusses the approach; the other uses it.

  • C

Ancient Rome belongs to B. A's discussion of domesticity is general, so a topic restricted to Rome cannot be central to both.

  • D

A mentions research into masculinity as one form of gender analysis. B centers on women's roles as wives and mothers. Augustus's father title fits the family imagery, but the function of masculinity in history isn't the central topic of both accounts.

  • E

A describes the celebratory aim of recovering lost ancestors. B isn't trying to honor forgotten women; it's explaining the political significance of their assigned roles.
