Reading the passage
We need evidence for Lessing's separation of two kinds of value: a painting can be aesthetically excellent without having equally high artistic value. A clear example of something beautiful that is not regarded as great art would support that distinction.
What we’re looking for
We are not trying to show merely that forgery exists, that experts can be fooled or that a painter can earn a living.
Working the answers
- A
A successful career producing originals does not show how aesthetic and artistic value relate in a particular painting. The forger's professional success is a different issue.
- BCorrect
The reproductions are beautiful but are not regarded as great art. That supplies the combination Lessing describes: aesthetic success without corresponding artistic greatness. Copying a masterpiece can display technical ability without producing the original achievement that made it significant.
- C
Deceiving an expert concerns whether a forgery is detected. It does not directly establish that the painting has aesthetic excellence while lacking equally high artistic value.
- D
Failed attempts by technically unskilled forgers do not illustrate the possibility at issue. We need aesthetically excellent work that still falls short artistically, not work that fails because the technique is inadequate.
- E
Changing standards for aesthetic excellence do not establish that aesthetic and artistic value can come apart. The criteria could change while the two evaluations still moved together. B directly provides the separated evaluations the argument needs.
