Reading the passage
Build the sequence in plain language. We ask how severe corporate punishment should be, introduce the economists' cost-benefit answer, explain what relying only on that answer entails, and expose the practical problem. The ending says another criterion is needed.
What we’re looking for
The middle is not a debate about whether the economists are ethical people. It tests their proposed method, including the consequences of accounting for detection.
Working the answers
- ACorrect
The opening asks the question and summarizes one answer. The discussion develops that answer's exclusive financial basis and what a proper calculation requires. The low-detection calculation exposes a practical flaw, and the final sentence affirms the need for a supplemented approach. Those are the major moves in order.
- B
The opening portions can sound plausible, but the ending is wrong. The author does not evaluate and reject the criticism of the economists' method. The author accepts that criticism and uses it to argue for something more.
- C
A method that excludes moral considerations is not the same as an argument attacking the ethics of the people proposing it. The author identifies a practical defect in their approach, not a defect in the economists' character.
- D
We do not receive two developed answers with one assumption identified for each. There is one explained proposal, followed by criticism and a call for an additional criterion.
- E
The threatened closures and job losses are consequences of implementing the calculation fully, not consequences of leaving the initial problem unsolved. E puts the wrong role and sequence on that discussion.
