Reading the passage

A describes a trend; B is an example of it. More specifically, A sees both the explanatory value and the cost of studying gender relations. B then gives us a gender-based account of Roman politics and culture.

What we’re looking for

Keep A's mixed assessment in the prediction. If we remember only that it describes the trend, an answer that wrongly turns the author into its straightforward advocate could look attractive.

Working the answers

  • A

B does reflect the trend, but endorses misstates A's overall response. The author acknowledges its value and then worries about what has been lost. The better description needs that qualification, not a simple statement of support.

  • B

A's general concern can be applied to B, as the earlier question asked us to do. But A doesn't directly criticize this Roman analysis or accuse it of failing to consider all available evidence. Applying a concern ourselves is different from reporting what A actually does.

  • C

A evaluates a development in historical scholarship. B explains an ancient political and cultural setting. Their evidence and conclusions aren't similar in the way this claims.

  • D
    Correct

The strengths are gender's ability to explain social and political structures; the weakness is its tendency to obscure individual women's lives. B exemplifies the approach through Augustus's domestic policies and imperial imagery.

  • E

Sharing a subject doesn't make the arguments parallel. Discussing the benefits and limits of an approach is different from using that approach to analyze Rome.
