Reading the passage

From individual women to gender relations. That's the shift in A's opening paragraph. Translate the abstract term before looking for it in an answer: historians increasingly study the social systems underlying the relationships between men and women. An answer can express that idea without using the word gender at all.

Working the answers

  • A
    Correct

This closely paraphrases the explanation of gender relations in the first paragraph. The new focus is on systems shaping interactions between men and women, rather than primarily on the lives of particular women.

  • B

Recovering overlooked women's contributions fits the older project of restoring lost ancestors to memory. The question asks what the focus shifted toward, not what women's history was already trying to recover.

  • C

Having the word gender doesn't make this the answer. A doesn't describe a project to expose biases that distorted earlier scholarship. It describes a change in the subject and scale of analysis.

  • D

The earlier historians did study women. A doesn't say the new approach consists of criticizing them for ignoring women; the change is toward gender relations and underlying structures.

  • E

Domesticity is one example of what the new work examines. But A doesn't describe documenting changes in that conception over time, and this one example is narrower than the overall shift the opening identifies.
