Reading the passage
A's author can see a limit in B without rejecting everything B accomplishes. We already identified the missing individual women. Now remember the other half of A's position: gender provides an effective way to explain social and political structures. B's account of Rome gives us a concrete example of that value.
Working the answers
- A
This attaches incompleteness to the wrong thing. B may leave individual lives unexplored, but it doesn't show that women's history has failed to enter the mainstream. A begins by describing its dramatic integration into that mainstream.
- B
A worries about abandoning individual women's lives. The author would not treat B's success as a justification for giving up that effort.
- C
B explains the political significance of assigned gender roles, not increased scholarly attention to particular women's political influence. A's stated trend runs from the individual subject toward the underlying system. Don't collapse the distinction just because both involve women.
- D
B is one example of scholarship that recognizes gender's significance, not evidence that much recent work fails to recognize it. This both generalizes beyond the example and reverses what the example demonstrates.
- ECorrect
Augustus's laws, family rhetoric, and artistic imagery become connected once we see the political work being done by women's domestic roles. That illustrates the “explanatory potential” A grants gender analysis. A can accept this success while continuing to ask what individual women's experiences have been left out.
