Reading the passage
We've already predicted the main point: the Negro Units helped create a national black theater that reflected a diverse community. The debates about what to perform explain why the resulting productions varied, and the concluding paragraph returns to that diversity.
What we’re looking for
Look for that achievement. Government support and the program's size matter because they helped make it possible; they are not the entire claim.
Working the answers
- A
The opening says these units were little studied until recently. It does not say historians now rank their artists among the most talented and influential of the period. A adds a particular critical judgment instead of explaining the achievement we just read about.
- B
We do not compare the FTP's lasting effects with those of every other government program. Being important does not establish that it had the greatest impact of all.
- CCorrect
This combines the first paragraph's national-theater claim with the diversity emphasized throughout the second paragraph and conclusion. The cautious “perhaps” also fits the author's qualified claim about how close the units came to creating such a theater.
- D
Folk drama was one of several approaches. Nothing establishes that it is what the units are best known for today, and privileging it misses the significance of the variety.
- E
Government aid during the Depression is real, but this answer leaves out what the Negro Units accomplished with that support. It describes the enabling program without capturing the national, diverse artistic achievement at the center of the discussion.
