Reading the passage
Why tell us all this? To explain why the old picture of confident hunters needs revision. We get the old conception, the assumptions that helped sustain it, and the fossil evidence supporting a scavenging account.
Working the answers
- A
Research methods matter because they produce new evidence. Comparing outdated and current methods isn't the overall purpose.
- B
The first paragraph does expose assumptions behind the traditional picture. But the writer goes beyond that: the later paragraphs explain the evidence for an alternative. This leaves most of the work out.
- C
The discussion isn't primarily a story of events unfolding. It presents and interprets research to reassess a view of early hominids.
- DCorrect
“Revisionary” means changing the existing account. The basis for that change includes the marks on animal bones, their order, and the wear on hominid teeth. This captures the job the research does in the discussion.
- E
This assumes the new theory has already replaced the traditional one. We are shown evidence supporting a revision, not a history of the field accepting it. Some researchers' proposed alternative isn't the same as an established replacement.
