Reading the passage
This is an EXCEPT question about what examining the marks can tell researchers. We should be able to support four choices from the fossil analysis. Keep the method attached to the conclusion: knowing something about these fossils doesn't necessarily mean the marks revealed it.
Working the answers
- A
The toothmarks were beneath the cuts, not on top of them (paragraph 3). That establishes which marks were made first, so this is mentioned.
- B
The researchers identify physical differences between tool cuts, toothmarks, and marks from sedimentary abrasion. That is part of the comparison in paragraph 3.
- CCorrect
The fossils are said to be almost two million years old, but we're never told that analyzing the marks established their age. An age is supplied; this method of determining it is not. That's the missing connection.
- D
The agents are what made the marks: stone tools, carnivores' teeth, or sediment rubbing against the bones. Distinguishing those sources is explicitly part of the investigation.
- E
The researchers compare microscopic features of grooves on the fossil bones with “similar grooves on modern bones.” This comparison is stated directly.
