Reading the passage
Keep the periods straight. We're looking for the description that does NOT fit the earlier Third Period. The later Popular Front pulled back from racial advocacy and became more cautious. Those changes can tell us what the party had been doing before.
Working the answers
- ACorrect
“Refrained” means held back from doing it. But the Popular Front is described as backing away from criticizing white chauvinism (paragraph 4). That means the earlier approach included those attacks. A reverses the change, making it the exception we're looking for.
- B
The International Labor Defense's work against lynch law helped establish the party's image as a powerful ally. The party benefited from those efforts, so this fits.
- C
The promise of a “new world” resonated with African-American traditions of struggle and hope. Members could find that inspiring without accepting every extreme statement the party made.
- D
Members steered clear of provocative displays and conflict when they could (paragraph 3). So yes, the party hadn't persuaded them to embrace confrontation. Don't confuse their membership with agreement on everything.
- E
The Popular Front reduced its involvement in local African-American politics. That change indicates earlier involvement. The direct support is the description of what became less important later, rather than an assumption that all the International Labor Defense's work was local.
