Darwin's conception of early prehistoric humans as confident,(443 more words not shown)

Which one of the following(9 more words not shown)

Reading the passage

We've already predicted the central idea: fossil evidence supports a different picture of early hominids, as scavengers rather than the confident hunters traditionally imagined. Look for some version of that change and the evidence behind it.

Working the answers

  • A

This changes the subject to the social organization of modern hunter-gatherers. The research concerns how early hominids obtained food. It doesn't refute a theory about the organization of today's societies.

  • B

The new techniques challenge an old picture of early humans. The writer doesn't make a general case against traditional research methods. A new way of gathering evidence and the belief it challenges are different things.

  • C
    Correct

This captures the familiar Darwinian conception, the new research techniques, and the support they provide for an alternative. The alternative is the scavenging account developed in the final paragraph.

  • D

This explains how the old conception became established. That is useful background from paragraph 1, but it leaves out the new findings and the alternative account that most of the discussion develops.

  • E

The revised relationship with animal predators fits part of the conclusion, but the evidence is misidentified. The new research examines fossils and marks on bones; it isn't presented as recent discoveries about the prehistoric environment.
