Reading the passage

What does Kelley say about the Popular Front? African-American participation declined as the party pulled back from racial issues and tried to appeal to moderates. But don't flatten that into everything about the period was bad: it initially seemed to offer new ways to resist repression, and it wasn't the only cause of the decline.

Working the answers

  • A
    Correct

The party retreated from attacks on white chauvinism, reduced its emphasis on local African-American issues, and became more cautious. Those changes made it less attractive as an ally. A says they hampered its appeal, which fits without claiming they explain the entire decline.

  • B

“Inimical” means hostile or harmful. This says the Popular Front was inherently against African-American interests from the start. Yet it “initially appealed to African-American communists” because it seemed to offer new strategies against repression. That is a much more qualified account.

  • C

The text says increasing cautiousness made the party less attractive in interracial conflicts. C turns that effect around.

  • D

We aren't told they judged the Popular Front an improvement over the Third Period's rhetoric. Some of that earlier rhetoric already appealed to them, and Kelley says the earlier period better supported their organization.

  • E

Wrong period. Extreme rhetoric and avoidance of confrontation appear in the Third Period discussion. The Popular Front becomes more cautious. The later loss of appeal doesn't support this explanation for it.
