Reading the passage
Paragraph 2 tells us what happened: political involvement, cultural reconnection, and new alliances. Paragraph 3 begins by attributing those effects to the character of the cause. It's answering why people rallied so broadly. The workers' demands for compensation and respect gave people common concerns despite their differences.
Working the answers
- A
Why the workers came to the United States is different from why people supported them once they arrived. This paragraph addresses the support.
- B
No earlier causes are compared with the Pico campaign.
- CCorrect
The human appeal of the demands and the shared concern about exploitation explain the broad support described in the preceding paragraph.
- D
The paragraph doesn't report other ethnic groups benefiting from the example. The next paragraph draws a possible lesson for them.
- E
This asks us to explain different reactions by generation. Paragraph 3 instead explains why differences became less important and people found a common cause.
