Reading the passage
The last paragraph gives us a culture with a different way to think about authenticity. We had been looking at imitation, collecting, and the value of an object's age or maker. Now collectors judge the masks by function.
What we’re looking for
My prediction is another angle on the fake-versus-authentic question. It adds a complication; it doesn't simply wrap up what we already know.
Working the answers
- A
The masks aren't offered as the tentative answer to the opening question. They introduce a different standard in a particular setting, and the closing question leaves even that standard open to challenge.
- B
The masks and their ceremonial use are new information. This isn't a summary of the preceding historical survey.
- C
The previous paragraph connects faking to collecting and the qualities collectors prize. The masks introduce a measure of authenticity; they aren't another historical example showing that faking flourishes when collecting does.
- DCorrect
The distinction is fake versus original or authentic. Function adds another facet—another aspect—to the intentions and collecting practices already discussed. That connects the new material to the same overall question.
- E
The opening defines a fake through deceptive intent. The final paragraph uses function and questions the experts' consensus; it doesn't simply affirm that opening definition.
