Reading the passage
My first prediction leaned toward the last theory: maybe kinglets survive by huddling. But that theory is still untested. Let's pull back to the question that runs through the whole discussion: how do these tiny birds survive when the explanations we have don't fully account for it?
Working the answers
- A
This accurately describes the surprising survival. Small size and limited feeding opportunities help create the puzzle. But it leaves out the central point that researchers still cannot fully explain it.
- B
The focus isn't on a sequence of tests. We learn why survival is puzzling and consider incomplete explanations, including one that hasn't yet been tested.
- C
No survival rate twice that of larger birds is given. The comparison with birds twice their mass concerns heat loss and food requirements, not survival rates.
- D
Small size makes staying warm difficult. It isn't said to make the birds difficult for researchers to observe.
- ECorrect
Researchers don't yet fully understand their survival. Stored fat covers only part of the energy requirement, torpor has no supporting evidence, and clustering remains a hypothesis. This improves on my initial emphasis on huddling: the possible solution belongs within a larger, unresolved mystery.
