Reading the passage
First identify what each sentence does. The second sentence reports research suggesting that incarceration can perpetuate delinquency. The later sentence asks whether a shoplifter could instead return the goods and apologize.
What we’re looking for
That's a concrete example of the alternative the writer recommends in response to the concern raised by the research.
Working the answers
- A
The writer favors this response. It isn't introduced as a policy to criticize.
- BCorrect
The proposed approach is rehabilitation without incarceration, and the shoplifting example shows what that could look like. The earlier finding helps motivate it: if confinement can reinforce delinquency, there is a reason to consider a penalty that teaches responsibility without confinement.
- C
Mainstream thinking favors severe punishment, often incarceration. Returning the goods and apologizing illustrates the writer's alternative to that approach, not confirmation of it.
- D
The shoplifting scenario isn't a competing interpretation of data. It shows a possible response to the problem the research raises.
- E
The sentence doesn't revisit the criminologists' methodology. It proposes something a young offender could be required to do.
