Reading the passage

The question sends us to a specific complaint at the end of paragraph 1. These anthropologists haven't adequately considered either modern hunter-gatherers' sophistication or the differences between modern and prehistoric environments.

What we’re looking for

I don't yet need to predict the exact research project. But if the writer says they have overlooked those differences, a useful next step would be to investigate them.

Working the answers

  • A

Taphonomy is important later, but merely applying it to modern societies doesn't address the comparison that the writer says these anthropologists have neglected.

  • B

This compares modern societies with one another. We need the comparison between modern and prehistoric conditions.

  • C
    Correct

The first paragraph specifically says modern environments contain “fewer large animal predators.” Comparing competition for food now with competition in prehistoric societies would help correct the mistake of treating those environments as interchangeable. This follows directly from the identified omission.

  • D

The previous century isn't the prehistoric past being discussed. Studying relatively recent lifestyles doesn't supply the needed comparison with distant hominid ancestors.

  • E

We aren't asked how industrialization is changing present-day survival strategies. The writer's concern here is whether modern societies are a sound guide to prehistoric ones.
