Reading the passage

The social changes came first. Delacroix then adjusted his art to conditions already developing. He gives us a contrast with the supposed prophets, whose art allegedly anticipated what would happen later.

What we’re looking for

Why does the writer need that contrast? To show that artistic innovation needn't be a forecast of social upheaval. Keep that purpose in view when an answer gives us a true detail about him.

Working the answers

  • A

One example doesn't establish what usually happens. Delacroix responded to social change; we don't learn that such changes generally produce important artistic innovations.

  • B
    Correct

Delacroix's new conditions were “already coming into being” because of earlier upheavals. His innovative work responded to them instead of anticipating them. That illustrates the paragraph's opening point: a decisive artistic change needn't be followed by dramatic events outside art.

  • C

Delacroix is offered as a contrast to the supposed predictors. His example doesn't show a painter successfully foretelling social change.

  • D

The writer isn't comparing ways to achieve innovation or recommending the best one. The question is how innovation relates to events outside art.

  • E

True, he adapted to social changes. But why mention that here? Because those changes had already begun, so the innovative art wasn't a prediction of them. E describes what he did; B captures the claim his example supports in this argument.
