Reading the passage
Document the grammar. Paragraph 2 explicitly says that must happen first.
What we’re looking for
But be careful when we get to B: seeing the word grammatical isn't enough. Developing a hierarchy means arranging the information, and the text separates that task from documenting it.
Working the answers
- ACorrect
The Utes carefully examine and categorize the structures of their language (paragraph 2). That's the example of documenting the grammar: work out the structures and classify them. The information is “then arranged in sequence.” A gives us the initial analysis, before that later arrangement.
- B
This is the tempting second step. The hierarchy runs from simpler to more complex usage. Before organizing the information for teaching, the community must analyze and classify what it will be organizing. B contains the right subject—grammar—but the wrong stage.
- C
Presentation methods are devised after the information is documented and put into sequence. This is later in the process.
- D
Finding written equivalents for sounds appears in the discussion of obstacles. It isn't identified as the first preparatory step.
- E
Whether to standardize spelling and dialect is another issue addressed later. The first stated task is analyzing and documenting the grammar.
