Reading the passage
Four descriptions have support, and we need the exception. The distinction we've been following still matters: the writer credits artistic innovation while challenging the claim of political and social prophecy. Let's check what each answer actually attributes to the work.
Working the answers
- A
Supported. Picasso and Braque focused chiefly on questions about representation and form (paragraph 3).
- B
Supported. The opening says the styles all departed substantially from established representational traditions (paragraph 1). That is a stylistic break, even though the answer doesn't repeat the sentence word for word.
- C
This initially gives me pause: where did we explicitly hear about new techniques? Looking back, we have a break with traditional artistic techniques and the writer's praise of “exceptional aesthetic innovations.” Together, those describe new ways of making art. We don't need the exact word new to support the idea.
- D
The artists are credited with anticipating “subsequent developments in the arts.” Those developments are made by later artists, so this describes getting ahead of the directions later artists would take. It doesn't mean predicting those people's lives. The writer preserves that artistic achievement while rejecting the claim of social prophecy.
- ECorrect
This is the supposed achievement the writer challenges. The forward-looking quality should be credited to aesthetic innovation, rather than clever guesses about political or social trends. C required a little more attention to its wording, but it has support; E conflicts with the writer's assessment.
