Reading the passage
Language loss is the problem. The opening immediately gives a response: community self-teaching. Next we learn how to prepare the instruction, then encounter spelling and dialect obstacles. The ending is a disagreement about writing the languages down, followed by a reply.
What we’re looking for
That's the sequence our answer needs to capture. We don't have to predict its exact wording.
Working the answers
- A
The order is wrong. Self-teaching appears in paragraph 1, before the spelling and dialect obstacles. A delays the solution until after those obstacles and their examples.
- B
The ending isn't simply a proposal for an alternative teaching method. Critics challenge the need for writing, and defenders explain why they do it. B misses that exchange. The earlier discussion also develops one central response, self-teaching, through several tasks rather than laying out separate solutions.
- CCorrect
Problem: language loss. Solution: self-teaching. Method: document the grammar and organize instruction. Obstacles: writing and dialect. Challenge and reply: critics call writing unnecessary; defenders point to declining oral traditions. The method does precede the obstacles—paragraph 2 describes the preparation before paragraph 3 introduces difficulties.
- D
We never finish by applying the solution to other similar problems. The Utes illustrate this preservation effort; there is no later extension to another problem.
- E
The proposal isn't rejected at the end. The objection is followed by a defense. E reverses the result of that exchange.
