Reading the passage

Our main-point prediction still applies: the platypus uses its bill to hunt underwater. Touch helps explain the response to contact; electrical detection helps explain finding prey before contact. We need the conclusion that brings both lines of research together.

Working the answers

  • A

The bill's importance as a sensory organ is established along the way. But this stops before the main finding about what that sensitivity allows the animal to do: locate food underwater.

  • B
    Correct

This gives us the research-backed conclusion stated near the beginning and developed through both studies. Locating prey underwater is the hunting function we predicted.

  • C

Bohringer's work concerns tactile stimulation. Electrical detection is investigated by Scheich. An electrical signal traveling through the nervous system after touch doesn't make the original stimulus an electric field detected by electroreceptors. C also limits the account to one scientist.

  • D

Scientists already knew the bill had openings with nerve endings. The new evidence explains their role in hunting. Repeating the background fact leaves out that discovery.

  • E

This captures the electrical response investigated in the second paragraph. It doesn't include the tactile research or give the broader conclusion about the bill's role in underwater feeding.
