Reading the passage

What did Scheich actually test? He suspected that the platypus detected prey through electric fields. He supplied that cue with a battery, then watched for the animal's response. Our rough prediction is an experiment that supplies a suspected sensory cue to test an animal's ability.

Working the answers

  • A

Decoys and calls are used to investigate mating habits, but no particular sensory mechanism for detecting prey is being tested. That misses the more specific structure of Scheich's experiment.

  • B

This initially looks promising: a researcher tests a proposed ability by supplying a stimulus. But it concerns navigation through echoes, not detecting prey. Playing cries also isn't the same as providing the returning echoes named in the hypothesis.

  • C
    Correct

This is the closer match. Heat sensitivity takes the place of electrical sensitivity, and the heat-generating object takes the place of the battery. In each case, an artificial source supplies the suspected cue to test whether the animal uses it to detect prey. C adds the hunting connection that B lacks.

  • D

The fisherman is trying to catch fish, not testing a hypothesis about their sensory abilities. Using an artificial lure alone doesn't reproduce the experimental purpose.

  • E

The warden is also capturing an animal, using actual food as bait. There's no experiment testing which sensory cue helps it find prey.
