Reading the passage
The warm exchange with immigrants from China gives us an example of people connecting through the Pico cause. My first thought is that it shows the workers finding common ground beyond their own national community.
What we’re looking for
But the question asks why the writer includes that example here. Check the surrounding claim so we can describe its role more precisely.
Working the answers
- A
The exchange isn't used to contrast U.S. and Korean working conditions. Its purpose is to illustrate a connection between people.
- B
It shows that people from another background can relate to the workers. That doesn't establish that the workers' problem is unique.
- CCorrect
The preceding sentences identify the role: recent immigrants can broaden their communities’ international outlook and establish personal international ties (paragraph 2). The exchange illustrates that contribution. This is more precise than merely saying the workers found allies.
- D
This is an actual example of a connection formed during the campaign, not a separate, parallel situation used to explain the Korean American community's activism by analogy.
- E
No different responses to similar problems are compared. The writer emphasizes the warmth of the exchange, not a contrast between how the two communities react.
