Reading the passage

We've already identified the central discovery: the platypus uses its bill to find prey, through both touch and electrical detection. For the purpose question, think about what the writer does to explain that discovery. We get research on both functions, not just one scientist or one kind of detection.

Working the answers

  • A

Finding prey at a distance is the problem Scheich addresses in paragraph 2. This leaves out the earlier research on touch and the bill's response to contact.

  • B
    Correct

Both scientists' work concerns what the bill does. Bohringer investigates its tactile sensitivity; Scheich investigates electrical detection during hunting. B doesn't explicitly say hunting, but it accurately covers the research presented across both paragraphs.

  • C

Bohringer's work is only part of the account. The second paragraph moves to Scheich's experiments, so assessing her work alone is too narrow.

  • D

This has the opposite problem: it captures Scheich but leaves out Bohringer and the touch studies.

  • E

The text identifies two kinds of receptors within the pores, then explains their functions through research. It isn't primarily a description of two kinds of pores.
