Reading the passage
We already worked out where the story was going: the Pico dispute brought people together, renewed cultural ties, and created wider alliances. We never learned whether the workers got their settlement, because the focus was the campaign's effect on the community.
What we’re looking for
This question asks for the main topic. Look for that event and what we learned about its effects, rather than just one group that participated or the broader lesson drawn at the end.
Working the answers
- A
This shifts the focus to improved working conditions in Korea. We learn how the campaign affected its supporters, not that their support produced those improvements.
- B
Contact with visitors is too vague to capture what brought about the changes. These weren't simply encounters with people from Korea; the shared cause in a labor dispute gave people something to rally around. D identifies that central event.
- C
The Pico representatives are workers visiting to pursue their claim, not recent immigrants. Recent immigrants have a role in the story, but making them the source of its effects misidentifies the central group.
- DCorrect
The dispute and its effects on the Korean American community organize the account. Political involvement, renewed identity, and new alliances are all parts of that topic.
- E
Second-generation political involvement is one effect of the campaign. It isn't the starting point from which the writers explain everything else that happened to the community.
