Reading the passage

Map the main moves. We begin with problems in traditional research and the promise of social science. Then the writer singles out outcomes analysis, explains what's missing from its win-loss counts, and describes two more useful approaches. We need an organization answer that follows that progression.

Working the answers

  • A
    Correct

Outcomes analysis is introduced, its weaknesses are explained, and alternatives follow. At first this may look incomplete because it doesn't separately mention the opening background. But it accurately captures the main progression; it doesn't need to name every introductory point.

  • B

No compromise is reached. The ending offers more useful methods, rather than a middle position between opposing sides.

  • C

The alternatives are existing research approaches, not a future plan for evaluating a theory. This misdescribes where the discussion ends.

  • D

We don't establish standards, test hypothetical cases against them, and then amend the standards. The examples of evidence explain why individual case details matter.

  • E

The writer doesn't revise the challenge at the end. After explaining why outcomes analysis falls short, the discussion moves to alternatives. It doesn't return to soften or change the criticism.
