Reading the passage
What does the writer think of traditional legal research? The word “justifiably” tells us that the criticism is deserved. The objection is specific: a few cases may not represent the bigger picture, and obscure topics may do little for people with real legal problems. Look for that critical attitude and its actual reason.
Working the answers
- A
Frustration about unrealized potential is conceivable, but it isn't the reason given for the criticism. We are told what's wrong with the research's focus, not how much potential it has failed to fulfill.
- BCorrect
The writer endorses the complaint that research concentrates on matters disconnected from people’s actual legal difficulties (paragraph 1). That directly supports criticism of its limited relevance to people involved in cases.
- C
We aren't told that traditional research helped develop the newer approaches. Liking those approaches doesn't mean crediting traditional research for them.
- D
This adds a history in which traditional research once played an important role and then outlasted it. The criticism concerns what it studies, not the end of a formerly useful era.
- E
No unique type of evidence is credited to traditional research, and gratitude doesn't fit the criticism expressed here.
