Reading the passage
Put the movement in our own words first. We're introduced to the email-privacy problem, then shown the debate about government records and a private-company dispute. The last paragraph adds rules about interception and expectations of privacy. We want an answer that follows that progression, even if it groups a lot of material into a few broad steps.
Working the answers
- ACorrect
The government debate and the automotive-company case are specific examples of the opening problem. Then look at the ending: encryption is a possible solution, followed by its drawback—lost convenience.
Our initial map focused more on the legal discussion, but A also captures those final sentences. “Specific examples” covers much of the middle; it doesn't need a separate step for every paragraph.
- B
Government and private workplaces aren't two solutions. They are settings where the problem arises. The writer doesn't choose a preferred solution between them.
- C
We aren't given a history of how the problem arose. Past court rulings describe the legal situation; they don't explain the historical causes of the privacy problem.
- D
The middle illustrates the problem through a debate and a court case. It isn't a list of questions that must be answered before finding a solution. And the ending qualifies encryption with a drawback, rather than simply arguing for it.
- E
Public and private settings aren't two approaches to solving the problem. More decisively, the writer never says the second approach is better than the first. Reporting a company's successful defense isn't endorsing it.
