Reading the passage
The question gives us people with mistaken beliefs. Paragraph 3 tells us what happens: if they have “erroneous beliefs,” they are likely to “misconstrue the messages.” Those just mean mistaken beliefs and misunderstood messages. New information gets filtered through the wrong picture they already have.
Working the answers
- A
This assumes the new information corrects the mistaken beliefs. The warning is that those beliefs can instead distort how the information is understood.
- B
We aren't told that people will partly revise their beliefs. Partial correction and misinterpretation are different outcomes.
- CCorrect
They fit the information into their existing framework and understand it differently from what the communicator intended. That's what it means to misconstrue the message.
- D
The misunderstanding fits, but the answer then adds another event: passing a further-distorted version to other people. We aren't told that this happens. A correct beginning doesn't support the rest of the claim.
- E
Misunderstanding information doesn't mean ignoring every message about a potentially dangerous technology. This replaces the stated result with a much broader claim.
