Reading the passage
First we learn about a problem: scholars were studying nearly everything around Homer's poems while neglecting the poems as poetry. Then we get the origins of that emphasis, followed by Adam Parry's role in the return to literary study.
What we’re looking for
So my rough outline is problem, origins, and renewal. The answer may describe that movement more broadly; it doesn't have to repeat each part of my outline.
Working the answers
- ACorrect
This is broader than our prediction, but it fits. The situation is the changing focus of Homeric scholarship. Paragraph 2 traces the nonpoetic emphasis to what happened to Milman Parry's work, and the ending explains how Adam helped prepare the later revival. We identify what happened and examine how it came about. A doesn't spell out every stage separately, but nothing in its description conflicts with that organization.
- B
There isn't a series of competing hypotheses followed by a choice between them. We might have wondered about funding during the read-through, but the actual account doesn't compare that possibility with other explanations.
- C
The two Parrys help explain the change in scholarship. The whole discussion isn't organized as a summary of their works; that description leaves out the situation their contributions are used to explain.
- D
No current debate is laid out. Different scholarly approaches over time aren't automatically opposing sides in a current argument.
- E
There are no three proposed solutions. The ending describes how renewed literary interest developed; it doesn't present a set of possible fixes to choose among.
