Reading the passage
The ending gives us a likely direction: involvement in current struggles in a country of origin can strengthen an immigrant community. We've seen cultural reconnection, greater political participation, and new alliances in the Pico example.
What we’re looking for
I would look for a claim along those lines. This is an inference question, though, so the right answer can express that lesson in different words.
Working the answers
- ACorrect
Those stronger connections and the “empowerment” named at the end are benefits. We don't need the literal word benefits to draw that modest conclusion. A says such communities can benefit from maintaining ties; it doesn't claim every tie will always help.
- B
The ending says communities need to go beyond learning about historical and cultural legacies (paragraph 4). Making that study the primary focus misses the emphasis on participating in current struggles.
- C
Nothing says addressing young people's problems across all backgrounds is the most successful way to mobilize them. The Pico campaign concerned the workers' demands.
- D
The generally more privileged second generation is described as often alienated from its roots. We aren't given this ranking of who feels closest to their heritage.
- E
The new alliances are effects on relations with other groups. This denies a connection the Pico example illustrates.
