Reading the passage
Go back to the particular studies named in the question. They describe people ignoring familiar dangers while getting upset about unusual, unlikely ones. We need both halves: too little concern about one risk and too much concern about another.
What we’re looking for
Someone who is careful about everything wouldn't fit. Neither would a person taking one sensible precaution. Look for the mismatch in the same person's behavior.
Working the answers
- A
Checking a parachute addresses a danger the answer itself describes. There is no second, more serious risk the skydiver ignores.
- B
Quitting smoking to reduce lung damage doesn't show the pattern of ignoring one danger while exaggerating another.
- C
The homeowner takes precautions against two risks. We need the contrast between neglecting a risk and worrying about another, not concern about both.
- DCorrect
The driver ignores the familiar danger of reckless driving while worrying about the much less likely event of a meteorite hitting the house. This supplies both halves of the pattern.
- E
We don't know that the concern about the waste dump is exaggerated. More decisively, this gives us only one risk: there's no separate everyday danger the townspeople are ignoring.
