Reading the passage
B tells us about an experiment: stimulate the mice's muscles, let them rest, and compare what happens to size and nuclei. A gives possible explanations but no comparable experimental results. That's the difference we're looking for.
Working the answers
- A
Neither questions whether muscle memory occurs. A's psychological explanation still explains the experience; saying an effect might depend on confidence does not mean the effect is imaginary.
- BCorrect
B describes the recent experiment in which muscle cells shrank but retained their extra nuclei. A does not report a recent experiment supporting either of its proposed explanations.
- C
A addresses the reader directly about training and remembering how much weight they could lift. An appeal to personal experience does not distinguish B from A in the required direction.
- D
Considering psychological factors is something A does. B focuses on changes inside muscle cells.
- E
Both offer possible causes. B has experimental support for its proposal, but its final claim still says the retained nuclei “could” be ready to make proteins again. Having evidence does not mean there is no proposed explanation left to evaluate.
