Reading the passage

The first sentence of A calls muscle memory “puzzling.” B opens by saying scientists think they know why it happens. With a promising explanation now available, B would probably find that description less appropriate than before.

What we’re looking for

We don't need to claim that every question has been settled. Less puzzling is enough.

Working the answers

  • A

B does not use its research to discredit bodybuilders' experiences. It seeks to explain those experiences.

  • B

The experience and the cellular process are not opposed to each other. B proposes that what happens inside muscle cells helps explain what athletes notice.

  • C

Experiencing muscle memory does not mean knowing why it happens. Athletes could accept the phenomenon and still find it puzzling, so B has no stated basis for predicting that most would reject A's description.

  • D
    Correct

The retained-nuclei finding offers a plausible explanation that was unavailable before the research. That makes “puzzling” less apt without requiring us to overstate the experiment as conclusive proof of the whole mechanism.

  • E

B does not accuse A of misunderstanding exercise psychology. It supplies new cellular evidence, not a correction of psychological principles.
