Reading the passage
Who does each writer sound like they're talking to? A repeatedly addresses someone who lifts weights: “your muscles,” the first time you trained, and what happens when you return. B explains the science in accessible terms and opens with the casual language of having been “buff.” That points to bodybuilders for A and a broader audience for B.
Working the answers
- A
A treats muscle memory as a familiar experience, not something it must persuade skeptics to accept. B also does not require readers to have experienced it personally.
- B
Neither piece reads like a technical report aimed at the specialized audiences listed here. A addresses lifters directly, and B explains basic cellular information for its readers.
- C
Nothing establishes a split between people with trainers and people exercising alone. Either kind of person could have the retraining experience A describes.
- DCorrect
A's direct references to the reader's lifting experience fit bodybuilders. B's accessible explanation of the experiment fits a general audience; scientific subject matter does not automatically imply a specialist readership.
- E
A's mention of a psychological possibility does not make its audience sports psychologists. Likewise, B's discussion of muscle cells does not establish that it was written for exercise physiologists. The question asks us to use style and tone, not match a topic to a profession.
