Reading the passage
Think about the principle behind the final paragraph's examples. Gray plans the inside of a house together with its structure: storage fits into staircases, furniture serves several purposes, and a table works across the inside-outside boundary. We're looking for a general design principle supported by those choices.
Working the answers
- A
She used lacquer and she used steel, but those two facts don't show she applied lacquer to steel. The lacquered-brick screen doesn't establish the entire proposed combination either. A joins separate details into a technique we aren't told she used.
- BCorrect
Gray rejected designing a building's outer structure separately from its interior (paragraph 3). Interior features can therefore matter to the overall structural plan, rather than being decorations added after the structure is settled. The integrated staircase storage gives us a concrete example.
- C
Her work grows from small objects into larger designs, but that doesn't establish that small-scale ornamental techniques are especially suitable for large structural elements. A progression in her career is not that general claim about suitability.
- D
She preferred simple forms over the flowing, leafy lines of Art Nouveau. We don't see a principle of combining austere and ornate elements for contrast.
- E
This would concern using a visible surface to identify hidden construction materials. The author instead explains how hidden and visible parts contribute to a unified design. No such method of identifying materials is described.
