Reading the passage
What evidence does the author specifically say is missing? Signs that people prepared animals for food within or near the clearings. Finding that evidence would connect the proposed economic activity to the actual places, addressing a stated objection to the resource-procurement model.
What we’re looking for
The issue isn't merely whether clearings could attract animals. It's whether these people used these clearings for that purpose.
Working the answers
- ACorrect
Evidence of animal processing in or near the clearings supplies exactly the link the opening says is generally lacking. It would give the author a stronger archaeological reason to connect the sites with obtaining food, even if it didn't settle every question about their origin.
- B
This is the same general kind of comparison already offered: recent premodern people used clearings to get resources. It doesn't supply the missing direct connection to Mesolithic activity at the sites.
- C
Showing that a technique works doesn't establish that these people used it. An experiment could demonstrate that clearings attract animals while leaving the historical explanation unresolved.
- D
Wildfires could create natural clearings, and the resource-procurement model already allows naturally created clearings. This tells us how the openings arose, not whether Mesolithic people used them to obtain food. It doesn't establish the author's alternative either.
- E
More clearings would not identify their use. A count could increase under different explanations; we still need evidence connecting them to the proposed economic activity.
