Reading the passage
This is a NOT question: we need the attitude for which the text gives no evidence. Sembène uses traditional forms to address injustice, follows ordinary people's difficulties, and hopes to change his viewers' understanding. Those details support several attitudes. They don't automatically tell us how he feels about every political effort.
Working the answers
- ACorrect
No attempts to reform the Senegalese government are described, so we have no evidence that he has become disenchanted with those attempts. Criticizing injustice or depicting a corrupt official doesn't establish disappointment with a particular reform process.
- B
His use of traditional characters and motifs to express contemporary views supports confidence in their suitability. He puts those inherited techniques to work rather than treating them as incapable of addressing current issues.
- C
The films “denounce social and political injustice.” That directly supports a concern with social justice, so it cannot be our unsupported attitude.
- D
The nameless street merchant and the difficulties he cannot overcome provide evidence of interest in ordinary people's changing fortunes and hardships. That's what “vicissitudes” refers to here; the word needn't make this a mysterious new topic.
- E
Sembène says he wants to raise his compatriots' awareness. Later, we learn that he hopes the protagonist's changed worldview will also change the viewer. Both details support a desire to educate his audience.
