Reading the passage
Our main point already connects two things: Sembène draws on West African storytelling, and he uses those techniques to express social and political criticism. The author shifts attention toward his methods without denying the films' political purpose.
What we’re looking for
Look for that combination. We don't need an answer that explicitly says the critics are wrong, but we do need more than one or two examples of the techniques they overlook.
Working the answers
- A
This is close because archetypal predicaments and open-ended plots are real borrowings from oral tales. But it stops at two techniques and leaves out what Sembène uses them to do: engage with contemporary social and political issues. It gives us part of his distinctive method, not the full central idea.
- B
Character types occupy much of the second paragraph. They support the larger account of his filmmaking, but they don't cover narrative structure, transformative journeys, or the films' social purpose.
- C
The author never says oral traditions were previously considered unsuitable for film. Adapting a tradition to a new medium doesn't establish a prior judgment that it could not belong there.
- D
These are Sembène's views. The fact that he draws on a shared culture doesn't mean his political beliefs are those held by most Senegalese people.
- ECorrect
This joins the traditional storytelling elements with their critical use in films about contemporary society. It captures both how Sembène works and what he is trying to accomplish.
