Reading the passage

This is an EXCEPT question, so four answers should match the list of expenses the new model eliminates. The second paragraph names warehousing, shipping to wholesalers and stores, displaying books, and returning unsold copies. We want the activity outside that list—not an activity that merely sounds expensive.

Working the answers

  • A

Warehousing printed books is explicitly listed. The new system stores digital files rather than inventories of finished copies, so this is something it dispenses with.

  • B
    Correct

Nothing eliminates cover design. A book printed after an order can still need a cover just as a book printed in advance does. The production schedule changes; the need to design the product doesn't disappear.

  • C

Shipping books to retail stores appears in the list. It belongs to the old distribution system the author says the new model avoids.

  • D

Returning unsold books is also expressly listed. Printing a copy when it is purchased avoids producing that unsold copy in advance.

  • E

Displaying physical books in retail stores is the remaining listed expense. It is one of the activities being eliminated, so it cannot be our EXCEPT answer.
