Reading the passage
Read what the journey does, not just what the word “initiatory” resembles. These journeys fundamentally transform how the central character sees the world (paragraph 4). The character starts with one outlook and emerges with another. Our prediction is therefore something like changing or transforming a person.
Working the answers
- A
“Beginning” may come to mind when we see the root of “initiatory.” But nothing here says these journeys begin a series. Their defining effect in this sentence is a changed worldview.
- B
The sentence doesn't describe trying an untested method. “Experimental” fails to capture the character's transformation.
- CCorrect
“Transformative” names the basic change the sentence immediately explains. The protagonist's outlook changes, and Sembène hopes the viewer's will change as well.
- D
“Unprecedented” means without a prior example. The author is explicitly connecting these journeys to a familiar storytelling tradition, not calling them entirely new.
- E
“Prefatory” means introductory. The journeys aren't merely an introduction to something else; they bring about the change in understanding that matters here.
