Reading the passage
We've already predicted the main point: the new publishing model saves costs, and competition will push publishers to give authors a larger share of the revenue. The first two paragraphs explain the economic change; the third follows its consequences for authors and publishers.
What we’re looking for
Look for an answer connecting those ideas. A statement can be true about the new model and still cover only one piece of the argument.
Working the answers
- A
The final sentence does call this a typical economic transition. But that provides context for the publishing changes already explained. Making typicality the main point loses the specific change in costs and the pressure on author royalties.
- B
“Rival” is fine: the author explicitly says “supplant or at least rival.” The problem is the added explanation about social and economic barriers. We hear about the time needed to build a catalog and publishers' reluctance, but this isn't an account of social factors hindering acceptance.
- C
Losing authors is a risk if traditional publishers fail to adapt. That conditional pressure doesn't establish a great deal of movement among publishing houses, and the answer misses the central demand for higher royalties.
- D
A preference for physical books could help explain the opening prediction, but the author never establishes that consumers have it. We cannot make a plausible missing reason the main point.
- ECorrect
This connects the economic transformation with its likely consequence: competitive pressure to pay authors a greater share. It captures both the new model and why established publishers will have to adjust.
