Reading the passage
The third paragraph brings in Manhattan after Stardust Memories. What changes? The example changes, but the point continues: another artist's supposedly elevated concerns are exposed as self-absorption. So I'd predict additional support for the pattern already identified.
Working the answers
- A
An exception would depart from that pattern. This example fits it.
- B
The paragraph doesn't narrow or modify the earlier claim. It doesn't say, for example, that Allen treats one kind of artist differently.
- C
It explicitly calls the ex-wife's view “similar” to the producer's. The two examples reinforce each other rather than provide a contrast.
- DCorrect
Manhattan adds support for the second paragraph's contention that artists' private concerns, presented as art, recur in Allen's films. The ex-wife's account is another version of that criticism.
- E
This isn't setting up a new contention for the last paragraph to establish. It supplies an example of the existing one; the final paragraph then adds evidence from how characters' stories end.
