Reading the passage
The proposed company would help growers breed better sheep. We already have sheep whose wool is more valuable; the research should help identify what makes them useful breeding stock.
What we’re looking for
Remember the explicit limit, though: selection for crossbreeding, not artificial manipulation of an individual sheep's genetic material. “Genetic research” doesn't automatically mean inserting genes into sheep.
Working the answers
- A
Introducing genes from other organisms conflicts with that limit. The company would select and breed sheep, not perform the genetic manipulation described here.
- B
The proposed work is directed at sheep and wool production. A broader program covering various areas of agriculture isn't established.
- C
Improving the value of wool isn't the same as encouraging growers to abandon strong wool for other varieties. That change in product isn't proposed.
- DCorrect
A profile of the traits found in sheep producing the most valuable wool would help identify suitable breeding stock. The final sentence connects superior wool production with identifying and keeping superior sheep for breeding. D fits that practical research role.
- E
The proposal isn't to administer funds for wool-processing programs. The author wants a breeding-research company as part of a shift away from those efforts.
