Reading the passage

We've already predicted a broad main point: Allen repeatedly portrays artists negatively. We should look for that recurring pattern, rather than pick a detail about just one film.

Working the answers

  • A
    Correct

A makes our rough prediction more precise: the negative traits are neuroticism and narcissism, and Deconstructing Harry is an especially intense expression of a career-long theme. The first paragraph's “concentrated reprise” directly supports that relationship. Our prediction didn't need every detail to guide us, but we should accept this fuller version.

  • B

This fits the final paragraph's contrast between unhappy artists and happier nonartists. But it makes happiness the central message and leaves out the larger pattern of narcissism and self-absorption developed through the earlier examples. A better captures the whole discussion and the opening film's place in it.

  • C

Sacrifice comes up in the Manhattan example. It isn't the point of all these films or the central claim about Deconstructing Harry.

  • D

The suggestion of an unresolved personal issue doesn't establish how Allen produced his most acclaimed work, or what most artists do. Those additions also shift the focus away from the recurring portrayals.

  • E

Nothing says narcissism and neuroticism are unavoidable or that they enable great art. The examples emphasize artistic pretension and personal costs, not that proposed benefit.
