Reading the passage

Why bring up chaos right after describing the model? To show that the model is unpredictable in a different, more extensive way. Under chaos, we could still predict the general destination. In this model, we can't even do that.

What we’re looking for

Keep that contrast in mind as we read the choices.

Working the answers

  • A

The earlier description of notches and zigzags establishes the many physical irregularities. The chaos comparison isn't counting those irregularities.

  • B

We're comparing what can be predicted, not identifying unusual kinds of physical irregularities.

  • C

This switches the focus to how much of a water basin is unpredictable. The local discussion uses chaos to clarify the uncertainty in Sommerer and Ott's model.

  • D
    Correct

The comparison emphasizes just how unpredictable the model is. Chaos leaves us with a general destination; the model removes even that remaining certainty. That is the degree of unpredictability the comparison helps us understand.

  • E

Fractal properties matter to the explanation, but their number isn't what the contrast with chaos establishes.
