Reading the passage
This asks for a principle behind the author's reasoning. We don't need a broad theory of film criticism. We need an idea that helps explain how the evidence supports the claim.
What we’re looking for
An exact prediction may be difficult here. Take the choices one at a time and connect them to a move the author actually makes.
Working the answers
- A
The author does consider several films together. But the purpose is to identify a recurring theme, not to judge an individual film's artistic merit. A adds that different evaluative task.
- B
No restriction is placed on who may interpret these films. Being an artist isn't presented as a qualification for having an opinion.
- CCorrect
The final paragraph treats characters' endings as significant evidence: self-centered artists end up miserable, while inartistic characters fare better. That reasoning makes sense if the fate a filmmaker gives a character can indicate approval or disapproval. We don't need an explicit announcement of the principle; we can see it being used.
- D
The contributions of other people involved in filmmaking aren't evaluated. This doesn't explain the author's use of Allen's characters as evidence about Allen.
- E
Cast members' earlier work isn't discussed, and artistic merit again isn't the question the author is investigating.
