The Canadian Auto Workers' (CAW) Legal Services Plan,(465 more words not shown)

Which one of the following(15 more words not shown)

Reading the passage

My rough map is description, complaints, then the writer's assessment. First we learn how the plan works; then we hear reactions to it; finally the writer explains why the promised benefits are doubtful.

What we’re looking for

That shorthand gives us a direction, but we'll need to check the whole sequence each answer describes.

Working the answers

  • A

The ending doesn't propose refinements. It argues that the incentives will produce disappointing results. That alone rules this sequence out.

  • B

There is no developed comparison with related past phenomena. The ending also criticizes the plans rather than approving them. Calling a plan a phenomenon isn't the decisive problem; the claimed sequence is.

  • C

The plan is already operating. This isn't a proposal whose prospects for implementation are being considered.

  • D
    Correct

This improves on my shorthand: paragraph two includes the directors' defense as well as the lawyers' complaints. So we have a description of the innovation, reasoning against and in favor of it, and then the writer's argument about it. All three stages fit.

  • E

The final paragraph develops the writer's reasons for doubting the benefits. It doesn't simply add another collection of data after an evaluation. E misses the argumentative job of that ending.
